BAND ON THE RISE: GRANVILLE
The stressful rigors of academic life enveloped me as I sat in the Cornell Science Library at my college, Swarthmore. I needed an escape as I plummeted once again into my Biology textbook and I decided to turn to my reliable friend: music. Not just any music would satisfy my mood though—I needed something unobtrusive, but inspirational. Only one band could fulfill these requirements: Granville, a post-rock outfit from my hometown of San Diego. Continuing with the biological theme of my studies, I compare the beautiful music of Granville to a hummingbird in flight. At first glance, the hummingbird appears to float effortlessly in the air, having total control as it moves from flower to flower. But if you take a closer look, its wings move at a remarkable 53 times a second. Granville’s music takes a similar form. Initially the songs have a refreshing simplicity, but as the tunes progress, the power and emotion grows. The crescendo of instrumental presence and layering leads to a climax of musical euphoria. A euphoria as incredible as the hummingbird’s feathers glistening in the August sun. I encourage you to experience Granville’s gorgeous music (http://granville.bandcamp.com/) and be taken away to a utopia where worries erode with the moving tide and serenity is as abundant as the number of sand granules on the shore.
